Aqua Therapy – Rehabilitation & Recovery in the Water

At Continuing Community Care (CCC) we provide Aqua Therapy – a specialised form of water-based rehabilitation designed to help people recover movement, rebuild strength and improve mobility.

Warm water provides support and buoyancy, reducing pressure on joints and muscles while allowing movements that may be difficult or impossible on land. This makes Aqua Therapy particularly effective for people recovering from stroke, neurological conditions, injury, surgery or chronic pain.

In this video you will see examples of Aqua Therapy techniques used during our sessions, helping participants improve:

  • Mobility and joint movement
    • Muscle strength
    • Balance and coordination
    • Walking and functional movement
    • Confidence in movement

Water creates a safe and supportive rehabilitation environment, allowing controlled exercises that can be adapted to each individual’s needs and ability.

Aqua Therapy is ideal for people who:

  • Are recovering from stroke or neurological conditions
    • Need to regain mobility after injury or surgery
    • Experience pain when exercising on land
    • Require gentle rehabilitation and guided movement

At CCC we run three types of aquatic sessions:

💚 Aquarobics – fitness and cardio
💗 Aqua Pilates – strength and stability
💙 Aqua Therapy – rehabilitation and recovery

All sessions take place in a warm hydrotherapy pool, providing a safe and supportive environment for exercise and rehabilitation.

Our long-term goal is to build Croydon’s first fully accessible Rehabilitation Centre with a hydrotherapy pool, so more people in our community can benefit from the healing power of water.

Aqua Pilates – Strength, Stability & Control in the Water

At Continuing Community Care (CCC) we are excited to introduce Aqua Pilates – a powerful water-based exercise that focuses on core strength, posture, balance and controlled movement.

Unlike high-impact workouts, exercising in water reduces stress on the joints while providing natural resistance, making it ideal for people who want to improve strength safely.

In this video our instructor demonstrates some of the Aqua Pilates movements used in our classes, helping participants develop:

  • Core strength
    • Balance and stability
    • Postural control
    • Flexibility and mobility
    • Gentle whole-body conditioning

Water creates 360° resistance, meaning every movement works multiple muscle groups while remaining low impact and joint-friendly.

Aqua Pilates is perfect for people who:
• Want a low-impact strength workout
• Are recovering from injury
• Need to improve stability and balance
• Prefer exercise that is gentle on joints but still effective

At CCC we run three types of aquatic sessions:

ONE TO ONE SESSIONS

One-to-One Hydrotherapy Sessions

We offer private one-to-one hydrotherapy sessions for individuals who require personalised support in the pool.

Sessions are charged at £120–£150 per hour, depending on time and availability.

To use our pool for a one-to-one session, clients must:

  • Provide their own suitably qualified therapist, who will accompany the client in the water throughout the session.
  • Provide a carer or support person to assist the client with changing, dressing, and personal care before and after the session.
  • Ensure that the therapist holds appropriate professional insurance.
  • Arrange their own transport to and from the facility.

Continuing Community Care provides the pool environment and one qualified member of staff for pool evacuation and health & safety purposes and does not supply therapy staff or personal care support for private bookings.

This structure ensures that clients receive safe, appropriate, and fully supported care, while allowing us to make our specialist hydrotherapy facilities available to a wider community.

Hydrotherapy Group Sessions

Expanding Our Impact – Future Specialist Hydrotherapy Programmes

As Continuing Community Care (CCC) works towards building Croydon’s first fully accessible Rehabilitation Centre, we will significantly expand the range of specialist group sessions available to the community.

Our dedicated facility will allow us to introduce targeted hydrotherapy programmes designed to support a wide range of conditions and needs, including:

• Stroke rehabilitation groups
• Sickle cell support sessions
• Learning disability-friendly sessions
• Paediatric hydrotherapy (children’s services)
• Fibromyalgia and chronic pain management
• Relaxation and mental wellbeing sessions

Each programme will be carefully structured to provide safe, effective and condition-specific support, delivered in a warm hydrotherapy environment by experienced professionals.

This will not just increase access — it will transform lives.

By offering specialised group pathways, we will be able to:
• Improve recovery outcomes
• Reduce isolation through community support
• Provide affordable, accessible rehabilitation options
• Support long-term condition management
• Create a clear journey from rehabilitation to fitness

Our vision is simple:
To create a centre where every individual — regardless of condition — has access to the healing power of water.

Learning Difficulties

How does hydrotherapy benefit people with Learning Difficulties?
Hydrotherapy provides a variety of opportunities for clients to experience, learn and enjoy new movement skills leading to maintained and increased functional skills, mobility and building self confidence.

Sickle Cell Anemia

How do you rehab Sickle Cell Anemia?
Physiotherapy involves using movement, exercise, and manual therapy to help people affected by injury or disease. For sickle cell anemia, physiotherapy may be in the form of hydrotherapy exercises, breathing exercises, and massages, or through devices such as transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS).

Ankylosing Spondylitis

Is hydrotherapy good for Ankylosing Spondylitis?
Hydrotherapy can be helpful however many of your joints are affected. It’s sometimes used if you’ve had joint replacement surgery or if you have back pain, Ankylosing Spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis and osteoarthritis, but it can be used for other types of arthritis as well.

Fibromyalgia Suffers

Is hydrotherapy pool good for fibromyalgia?
How Water Alleviates Fibromyalgia Symptoms. The water’s buoyancy eases stress on the joints, and its warmth helps tight muscles relax. This reduces stiffness and alleviates muscle spasms, resulting in greater flexibility and range of motion than is possible with land-based activities.

Autistic Clients

Is hydrotherapy good for autism?
The benefits of water therapy and of developing both aquatic skills and swimming skills are well documented for those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and have proven to be one of the more effective forms of treatment.

Paediatric Sessions

Is hydrotherapy good for children?
Hydrotherapy gives your child the opportunity to develop mind-muscle connection in a warm, fun, and engaging environment. The sensory stimulation of the aquatic therapy combined with movements and increased strength can all contribute to increased body awareness.

Arthritis Suffers
